FSSAI license is a mandatory registration/license issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India for all food business operators. Every person or entity involved in food business needs it:
- Restaurants and eateries
 - Food manufacturers and processors
 - Food distributors and retailers
 - Food importers and exporters
 - Caterers and cloud kitchens
 - Home-based food businesses
 
What are the types of FSSAI licenses?
1. Basic Registration (₹12 Lakh turnover or less)
For petty food businesses, small manufacturers, storage units with turnover up to ₹12 lakhs annually.
2. State License (₹12 Lakh - ₹20 Crore)
For medium-scale businesses operating within one state with turnover between ₹12 lakhs to ₹20 crores.
3. Central License (Above ₹20 Crore)
For large businesses with turnover above ₹20 crores or operating in multiple states/importing food.
What is the difference between FSSAI registration and license?
FSSAI Registration (Basic): For small food businesses with turnover up to ₹12 lakhs. Simple process, basic requirements, 14-digit registration number.
FSSAI License: For medium to large businesses. More stringent requirements, detailed documentation, physical inspection may be required, 14-digit license number with additional security features.
FSSAI License Application Process
How do I apply for an FSSAI license online?
Follow these steps to apply online:
- Visit the FSSAI portal at foodlicensing.fssai.gov.in
 - Create an account or login if already registered
 - Select appropriate license type based on turnover
 - Fill Form A (Registration) or Form B (License) completely
 - Upload required documents (scanned copies)
 - Pay application fee online
 - Submit application and note reference number
 - Track status using reference number
 
What documents are required for FSSAI license application?
Identity Documents:
- PAN card of business/proprietor
 - Aadhaar card of FBO
 - Passport size photographs
 
Business Documents:
- Business registration certificate
 - Partnership deed/MOA/AOA
 - Trade license (if applicable)
 
Premises Documents:
- Address proof (rent agreement)
 - Utility bills
 - Property tax receipt
 
Operational Documents:
- Food safety management plan
 - List of food products
 - Water test report (if required)
 
How long does it take to get an FSSAI license?
Basic Registration: 7-15 working days
State License: 30-60 days (varies by state)
Central License: 60-90 days
Processing time depends on completeness of application and whether physical inspection is required.
